SWANA Chronicles

Liasmine Fodil

Founder of the Tilawin Project, Liasmine FODIL was born and lives in Algeria. In her photographic practice, she takes a critical look at her environment to try to understand its functioning; she also questions the place of women in society. It is through individual stories that she addresses her questions. She has exhibited her work several times in Algeria and abroad. For over two years, she has been dedicated to the Tilawin project, the first mentoring program for and by Algerian women photographers and the diaspora.

Looking for a lost soul!

I thought a lot about my grandmother who passed away a year ago.  I was asking myself if she had lived happily as a woman.

Several images of this series were taken in the house where she lived most of her life. The atmosphere has become gloomy since her death.

From childhood to adolescence, her house was a place of play. Then, when I grew up and became aware of my femininity and then of the feminine issue, it became the universe of my grandmother who was born in the 1920s. This old woman who rarely went out, was totally devoted to her home, and never spoke her mind publicly. Sometimes, I wonder how she would have lived if she had the possibility to choose her life? Can women today choose the life they want to lead? Or is it determined mainly by chance and social conventions?

In this work, I tried to convey my feelings by seeking answers in the imprints that the soul of my grandmother left in the house … and in places where I thought to find clues.
