Gigi is an Algerian comic artist and freelance illustrator based in Paris. After graduating from Architecture School in Algiers, she is now pursuing a master’s degree in History and Heritage in Paris. She published her first comic book “Rwidjel & The Cat” at the publishing house Dalimen, released during the 14th edition of the Algiers’ International Comic Books Festival (FIBDA) in 2022. She also published in 2023 the comic-strips “Nowhere Home” in the 4th issue of the italian cultural magazine ARABPOP, and “Hyposentimental” in the 18th issue of the lebanese comic books collective Samandal Comics.
Gigi’s work focuses mainly on exploring the Algerian identity through the everyday life of her characters, and aspires to depict the non-monolithic nature of identities, the beauty that resides within their complexity and plurality, all the while paying attention to elements of the Algerian history and cultural heritage. In addition to her life experiences, Gigi draws her inspiration mainly from indie cinema’s aesthetics and tries to bring a cinematic touch to her comics, by considering each panel like a film shot.
