SWANA Chronicles

Leila Abdellani

A twenty something architecture graduate from Algiers who
picked up her father’s compact camera at the age of 17 with a
scattered yet curious gaze. Slowly, what started as an absent-minded and inattentive practice turned into a tool for me to make sense of my surroundings.

Growing up in a dense urban area, the details that make up the
built environment caught my attention right away, which later on led me to pursue architecture and urbanism. This helped me take a step back, insert those details into both physical and historical perspectives, and start to see a sharper bigger picture of the city.

Quickly, my work revolved around trying to grasp the
complexities and sensitivities of the lived urban space, questioning how we shape it as it shapes us in return, and exploring its edges and limits.
