Iraqi London-based painter, ceramist, and sculptor who grew up between the USA (1955-68), Baghdad, where Architecture studies took place in the 1970s, and London where residence has been established since 1982, with intermittent stays in Paris. This diverse background significantly influenced the artist’s creative output. Within an aesthetic shaped by architectural discipline, a network of references emerges, bridging East and West, ancient and contemporary themes, societal concerns, and personal reflections, often delving into ‘spirituality’ and the transient nature of human existence. The artist’s visual vocabulary consists of color and basic geometric forms, creating an ideal space for harmony and order.
Beyond individual artistic pursuits, the artist’s work is integral to the ascent of modern art from the Middle East. Noteworthy curatorial contributions include the initiation of the first international showcase of contemporary and modern Iraqi art, touring the UK and the USA from 2000 to 2003. The artist also holds the role of editor for the seminal publication “Strokes of Genius: Contemporary Iraqi Art” (Saqi Books 2001). A critical platform, Aya Gallery London, was co-founded in 2002, dedicated to promoting and advancing art from Iraq and the Middle East, a commitment sustained until 2010. Additionally, the artist served as a judge for the inaugural Arab Art and Culture Award in the UK in 2008.
The artist’s creations have found a place in notable private and public collections globally. Presently, representation is through Galerie Mark Hachem, located in Place des Vosges, Paris.
