Nagat El Mahi

Nagat M.A. Elmahi is an accomplished educationist, painter, and designer with over 20 years of experience. She is a British of Sudanese origin, born and raised in El-Fasher, Sudan. She currently doubles up as a lecturer and the head of the painting department at the College of Fine and Applied Art (CFAA) at Sudan University.

Nagat M.A. Elmahi received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art (Painting) from Sudan University at the CFAA in 1998. Fortunately, she was absorbed in the painting department at the same college as a teaching assistant. To sharpen her skills in art, she participated in a three-week painting and colour training at Alanus Hochschule für Kunst/Bonn in November 2002. This was a Germany Joint multimedia project bringing together 50 artists from the Islamic world and Germany for artistic exchange. She also participated in a follow-up training and collaborative practice program for three weeks, bringing together staff and graduates of CFAA with artists at the Alanus Hochschule für Kunst-German Cultural Centre, Khartoum, Sudan, in November 2003. In 2005, she proceeded to Britain, where she resided for four years.

While in Britain, she did an Art-In-Education training for refugees and asylum seekers from September 2005 to March 2006. She has a Master’s degree in philosophy (Painting) from Sudan University, having graduated in 2016. She is currently pursuing a PH.D. in painting from Sudan University.

Her latest solo exhibition was in October 2015, titled Environment & the Construction of the paintings, which was exhibited at the College of Fine & Applied Art Exhibition Hall. Her other solo exhibitions included Internationales Frauenzentrum, in Bonn, Germany, in December 2008; Another City (11 paintings), exhibited in London at the Oval House from June 6 and July 24, 2006 (Crang, 2010); Paradoxes au Féminin (30 paintings) at the Europia Galleria in Paris, France, from April 25 to May 20, 2005; the Eclats (included 39 paintings) celebrating International Women’s Day exhibited at the French Cultural Centre, Khartoum on March 6 to 25,2005; and lastly, 18 paintings at the Solo Exhibition held between the 15th and 30th November 2001 in Khartoum, Sudan,(Osman, 2010).

Additionally, she participated in over 20 group exhibitions held within and beyond Sudan. The most prominent group exhibitions occurred in London, Dortmund, Sofia, N’djamena, Gelsenkirchen, Tripoli, Cairo, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dubai, and Sudan. Her works in private collections were in Australia, Lebanon, Kenya, France, Sudan, the USA, and England. Her works in public collections were in The French Cultural Center, Khartoum, and Sudan’s UNESCO Office.
