Nazli Madkour

Born in Cairo in 1949, Nazli Madkour is a prominent Egyptian artist whose artistic journey spans over four decades. She earned her Master’s Degree in Political Economy from the American University in Cairo before making a pivotal decision in 1981. At that time, she resigned from her post as an Economic Expert at the Industrial Development Centre for Arab States (Arab League, Cairo) to fully dedicate herself to the world of art.

Nazli’s artistic endeavors have been showcased in major one-person exhibitions around the globe. From Cairo and Baltimore to Paris, Munich, Tokyo, and beyond, her exhibitions have left an indelible mark on the international art scene. Noteworthy venues include The American Cultural Center in Cairo, The Egyptian Cultural Center in Paris, and Le Corbusier Centre in Firminy, France.

Since 1981, Nazli Madkour has actively participated in numerous group exhibitions in various countries, including Portugal, Germany, Italy, France, Lebanon, Sharjah, Kuwait, Greece, Japan, the UK, and the USA. Her involvement extends to prestigious events such as the Arab Women Artists exhibition, “Forces of Change” in the USA (1993-1995) and the exhibition of Egyptian Women Artists in Beijing, China (1995).

Her artistic contributions have been recognized and acquired by esteemed institutions, including the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art, the National Cultural Center (Cairo Opera House), and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. Private collections in Egypt and several foreign countries also hold her distinctive works.

In addition to her artistic pursuits, Nazli Madkour has been an active participant in cultural events, symposiums, and international juries. Notably, she served on the international Jury for the XII Cairo Biennale in December 2010 and as the President of the jury of the 23rd Youth Salon in April 2012.

An accomplished author, Nazli Madkour wrote the book “Egyptian Women and Artistic Creativity” in Arabic in 1989, later published in English under the title “Women and Art in Egypt” in 1993 by the State Information Department.

Her artistic prowess extends beyond canvas as she illustrated a deluxe edition of Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz’s book “Arabian Days and Nights,” published by “The Limited Editions Club” in New York, USA, in 2005. This collection has been exhibited globally, including in Egypt, Holland, Japan, Canada, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, and Sweden.

In 2023, Al-Karma Publishing House released the monograph “NAZLI MADKOUR,” providing a comprehensive overview of her illustrious career and artistic trajectory over the past four decades. Nazli Madkour continues to be a trailblazer in the realm of contemporary art, leaving an enduring legacy for future generations.
