Rawan Abbas (b.1996) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Cairo, Egypt. She has participated in many shows where she exhibited textiles, sculpture, installation art, and video. Notably, she participated in the Dak’art Biennial in 2022, London’s 1-54 Art Fair with Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art in 2021, and had two solo exhibitions in Hamburg, Germany in 2023 at Westwerk and Galerie Genscher.She took part in residencies such as Achterhaus Ateliergemeinschaft e.V., Westwerk’s International Artist Residency in Hamburg, Germany andEmptyroom.art’s online Nature Residency. Abbas facilitates printmaking workshops at the Contemporary Image Collective in Cairo, and she initiated a self organised printmaking club along with her workshop participants.
Her textile practice engages with themes of womanhood and feminine implications, social dynamics, and Egyptian history and folklore while being influenced by her lived experience as an Egyptian Woman. Abbas acquired her BA from the Faculty of Applied Arts – Helwan University in 2020, and has studied Fine Art for a year at Cardiff Metropolitan University in Cardiff, Wales on a grant from Erasmus+ as part of her BA.
