SWANA Chronicles

Ruwan Hamdy

Ruwan Hamdy (b. 1995) an architect and interdisciplinary artist based in Alexandria. She works primarily with photography , mixed media and space intervention. Broadly, she’s interested in the intersection of architecture, art and design.

Her work tends to question the unwritten rules that shape our perceptions and inform our behavior in the spaces we navigate. She seeks experimental approaches that encourage interactive experiences such as augmented reality, public art, temporary installations, and audio-visual work, and draws inspiration from the social and political climate, as well as her own personal experiences. Interactivity and Re-using are
terms that are within the undertones of her practice as they expand her understanding of visuals through experimenting with different modes of using/re-using images and space.

Hamdy describes her practice as a point of intersection of art and design, the image as both flat plan and volume within and the experimental approach as a mode to decolonize her perceptions of the surroundings and usage of image.

She participated in programs and exhibitions that merge art and architecture. She was recently featured as “Ones to Watch” in the No! Wahala Magazine and worked on a collaboration With AL Athar Lina
Initiative producing an augmented reality mural on intangible cultural heritage which was placed in Al-Khalifa district in Cairo.

Her photographic work has been exhibited at the Egyptian Pavilion at the
Venice Biennale, the Tahrir Cultural Center at the American University in Cairo and French institute, Cairo.
