The arbitrary nature of the capital’s constantly changing facades serves as inspiration for Dalila Hassanein’s work. These layers, which include graffiti, local advertising, commercial calligraphy, dates and names, serve as reminders of the city’s past and urban development. Hassanein paints portrayals of the city in her first solo show “On The Road”, where her large scale paintings produce an almost overpowering sensory experience which may seem very familiar to Egyptian inhabitants. By using Cairo as a stencil, Hassanein creates hyperrealistic images of the city while celebrating Cairo’s creative informality.
